Toonspeak has announced details of its outstanding new production, Time Oot – a fun-filled 80s inspired musical, packed with unforgettable songs and non-stop action.
Toonspeak provides access to free, high quality opportunities in theatre and the arts for young people in Glasgow and will premiere its latest production at Platform on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 July.
Building on the success of previous productions including Ma Bit and TELT, Time Oot is the 24th major production from Toonspeak and features laugh out loud comedy and sensational tunes. The youth-led, collaborative piece is co-created by the members of Toonspeak who have worked with professional artists to create their own performance.
Over 50 young people have devised, written and are working as productions artists for this year’s musical, alongside co-directors John Kielty and Steven Leach, workshop artists Jasmine Main and Janine Fearmechoreographer Emma Jayne Park, assistant choreographer Katie Miller and David Cosgrove, writer of the sell-out Toonspeak show ‘Ma Bit’.
Set in 1985, at a Live Aid school dance fundraiser, Time Oot transports audiences back to a world of shoulder pads and banging synth beats as they meet various groups of teenagers and see how tensions rise between the Punks, New Romantics, Populars, the Geeks and the Lone Wolf.
Toonspeak’s largest-scale show yet will bring a visually colourful and vibrant production to the stage, touching on themes of acceptance and being different and true to yourself which are as relevant now to generations engaging daily with social media, as they were to kids of the 80s.
Chloe Davidson, Participant and Young Board Director at Toonspeak said: “Being part of Toonspeak’s summer shows are incredible, and the bar is set high for youth led participation. From the writing group, devising, song writers, to the production team and even onto the board of directors there is a young person on each level guiding this show.”
“The young people are so excited to be writing a musical again, and even more so that it’s from their own creation. There’s a buzz in the air in each rehearsal. It’s empowering, and shows them nothing’s impossible, and working with outstanding industry professionals gives a boost to their own career paths.”
Hazel Wotherspoon, Chief Executive of Toonspeak, said: “At Toonspeak we’re very proud to offer high quality theatre and arts programmes for young people in Glasgow who may otherwise not get the chance to create world-class theatre productions on a professional stage. We are grateful for support from our associate partner Platform and our funders and supporters in bringing this musical to the stage.”
“50 young people have been working tirelessly on this year’s production, Time Oot and we can’t wait for audiences to see the result – it’s a blast from the past, with a timeless message that will make people laugh out loud and want to get up and dance. We look forward to seeing everyone there.”
